12-16 Bastion Square was built in 1888 by architect Thomas Sorby for the estate of James Murray Reid (1802-1868) and his son in law William John MacDonald, who also owned the adjacent building to the west at 8-10 Bastion Square.
This building is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places as the MacDonald Block.
