A Brief History of 1319 Government Street
Current government records say 1319 Government Street was built in 1995. But we think that is incorrect. We think this is a 19th century building with a major facade renovation done in 1995.
We think this building once housed Dixi H. Ross & Co., one of Victoria’s early grocery businesses. Here are some City of Victoria Archives photo showing Dixi H. Ross & Co. Grocers, 1317 Government Street:
- City of Victoria Archives photo M01048 – Dixi H. Ross & Co. Grocers, 1317 Government Street, circa 1903

Dixi Harrison Ross (1852-1899) is buried in Ross Bay Cemetery.
