1003 Vancouver Street

1003 Vancouver Street was designed and built in 1885 by architect John Teague for Charles Hayward, a funeral director who also served on the School Board, on Victoria City Council and as Mayor of Victoria between 1900-1902. Charles Hayward lived here until his death in 1919. His business is still in operation as Hayward’s Funeral & Cremation Services.

1003 Vancouver Street is listed on the City of Victoria Heritage Register and the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

It is currently divided into rental apartments.

A Brief History of 1003 Vancouver Street

1003 Vancouver Street was designed and built in 1885 by architect John Teague for Charles Hayward, a funeral director who also served on the School Board, on Victoria City Council and as Mayor of Victoria between 1900-1902. Charles Hayward lived here until his death in 1919. His business is still in operation as Hayward’s Funeral & Cremation Services.

The Hayward family seems to have sold the property circa 1930. During the 1930’s the house was used as St. Christopher’s College. In the early 1940’s it was converted into a rooming house before being divided into rental apartments.
