A Brief History of 1595 Rockland Avenue
1955 Rockland Avenue was designed and built in 1910 by architect Samuel Maclure for Herbert Bowen, who named the house Rappahannock, likely after his birthplace in Virginia.
It is listed on the Victoria Heritage Registry.
At the time 1595 Rockland Avenue was built, Herbert Bowen was a prominent realtor in Victoria. He lived here until 1914, when he seems to have suffered financial difficulties following the severe worldwide recession of 1913. Later records show Herbert Bowen working as a clerk at the Strathcona Hotel in downtown Victoria.
Rappahannock was a single family home until 1954, when it was converted into 9 apartments by Maurice Troup.
It is still apartments today.
