547-555 Johnson Street was built in 1890 for Thomas Tugwell as the Colonial Hotel, intended to cater to railway passengers from the E&N Railway, which then had its Victoria terminus half a block west at the intersection of Johnson Street and Store Street.
It is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places as the Colonial Hotel.
In the 1980’s this building was configured to its current use as commercial space on the main floor with 32 rental apartments on the upper floors.

A Brief History of 547-555 Johnson Street
547-555 Johnson Street was built in 1890 for Thomas Tugwell as the Colonial Hotel, intended to cater to railway passengers from the E&N Railway, which then had its Victoria terminus half a block west at the intersection of Johnson Street and Store Street. The 1890 building cost was $16,000.
It is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places as the Colonial Hotel.
The building originally had two flanking wings at each end. The east wing has survived at 557-561 Johnson Street. The original west wing was demolished in 1892 and replaced by the present building at 541-545 Johnson Street.
In the 1980’s this building was configured to its current use as commercial space on the main floor with 32 rental apartments on the upper floors.
