Movies & Theater 1910-1919
We came across this playbill for the Pantages Theater, now the McPherson Playhouse, from August 1917.
The bill included a movie feature on Monday and Tuesday, followed by several vaudeville acts performing on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday..
The movie feature was The Cigarette Girl starring Gladys Hulette (1896-1991), released by in July 1917 by Astra Film and Pathe Exchange.
The vaudeville program included:
- The Mimic World – billed as vaudeville’s biggest act, with 30 people. “One Solid Hour of Wonderful Entertainment, Featuring Felix, of Felix & Claire, America’s Foremost Comedian and Mimic, In A Sparkling Musical Comedy;
- The Lampinis – European Comedy Illusionists
- Abrams & Johns – performing “When Hubby Realizes”
- Smith & McGuire – “The Youthful Duo”
- Joe Roberts, The Banjo King
The former Pantages Theater is now the McPherson Playhouse , 3 Centennial Square, at the corner of Government Street and Pandora Avenue. It was built in 1914 by architect Jesse M. Warren for the firm of McPherson, Fullerton & Elliot, which also owned the Central Building, 620 View Street, on View Street at Broad Street.
