Government Street – 900 Block
921 Government Street / 609 Broughton Street – the Weiler Building
Architectural historians refer to this landmark building at 921 Government Street / 609 Broughton Street as the Weiler Brothers Building or simply the Weiler Building.
The Weiler Building was built in 1899 by architect Thomas Sorby for Weiler Brothers, which used the building as a department store. It was used as a department store until the late 1940’s.
It is now retail space on the main floor with office space on the upper floors.
The Weiler Building is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

A Brief History of the Weiler Building, 921 Government Street / 609 Broughton Street
The Weiler Building was built in 1899 by architect Thomas Sorby for the Weiler brothers, who used it as Weiler Brothers Ltd., one of Victoria’s first department stores.
It was used as a department store until the late 1940’s.
In the 1950’s this building was converted to offices on the upper floors with retail and commercial space on the main floor. It still retains that configuration.

The Weiler family also built two other nearby historic buildings: 1005-1009 Broad Street and 1000-1012 Douglas Street.
1005-1009 Broad Street / 636 Broughton Street – Weiler Building
Built as a furniture factory and warehouse for John Weiler in 1884.
1000-1012 Douglas Street / 680-690 Broughton Street
Built in 1920 by architect Percy Fox for Otto Weiler, who used it for an auto supply business.
