Historic Victoria Advertisements –
Men’s Clothing 1900-1909
As part of our series on Historic Victoria Advertisements, Men’s Clothing, here is a 1909 advertisement for F.A. Gowen, a Men’s Clothing store located at 1114 Government Street.
Notice the reference to Welch-Margetson, a British clothing manufacturer which was in business between 1824 and 1963, when it was purchased by CoatsPatons Ltd., now Coats Group PLC.
Notice also the shirts with separate collars in the illustration.
1114 Government Street was in the Mahon Building, which is still standing.
The Mahon Building was built in 1908 so F.A. Gowen would have been one of its first commercial tenants.
