Historic Victoria Advertisements
Automobiles & Transportation 1920-1929
As part of our series on Historic Victoria Advertisements, Automobiles & Transportation, 1920-1929, here is a 1926 advertisement for Firestone tires, from Thomas Plimley, Limited, “Broughton Street at Broad”.
We think the Thomas Plimley location was on the south side of the intersection of Broughton Street and Broad Street, where the Broughton Square Parkade is today.
Notice at the bottom of the advertisement that “Pneumatics” or air filled tires (what the advertisement refers to as “balloons”), or “Solids” (solid tires with no air inside) were available for cars. The advertisement notes the advantages of air filled tires as additional shock absorbers compared to solid tires.
Here is a map showing what we believe to have been the 1926 location of Thomas Plimley Limited at Broughton Street and Broad Street, now the Broughton Square Parkade:
Here is a Google Street View image showing the present appearance of what we believe to have been the 1926 location of Thomas Plimley Limited at Broughton Street and Broad Street:
